In December 2008, a dramatic storm with waves of 12 m height affected some areas of the NW Mediterranean Sea. It has been suggested that this type of storm occurs within a 50 years period. The physical disturbance generated by the storm produced high mortality (partial or total) of sessile species. These two pictures of the same quadrat were taken with one year of difference. A quick glance is enough to realize the effects of the storm: from the well-developed community before (left) to the disturbed assemblage after (right) the storm. Carall Bernat, Medes Islands. Depth ~ 15 m.
